Criterion 6 - Maintaining other functions and socio-economic conditions
The purpose of this Manual is to describe a method for the evaluation of the socio-economic functions of coppice forests in some case studies located in Sardinia and Tuscany. The evaluation of socio-economic functions is based on the analysis and quantification of Criterion 6 indicators of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). In detail the manual focuses on two “current” SFM indicators (contribution of forest sector to GDP and net revenue) and four “new” indicators (forest sector workforce, trade in wood, energy from wood resources and accessibility for recreation). This field manual provides the analysis of each indicator and describes the sampling methods in order to detect a representative (from statistical point o view) population. The manual concludes with the interpretation of the collected data, and also provides bibliographic references for better understand the information provided. Criterion 5 - Maintenance, conservation and appropriate enhancement of protective functions in forest management (notably soil and water)
This Manual describes the procedures to obtain data on new indicators of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM), to be applied at local scale, in order to evaluate the protective functions of forests.
The proposed new indicators are quantitative and retain an explicit ecophysiological value. They provide information on protective functioning of forest ecosystems, with particular reference to their role on water regime and prevention of soil erosion.
The meaning of each indicator proposed is explained, and detailed guidelines on sampling methods and on data processing and interpretation are given.
Criterion 4 - Biological diversity in forest ecosystem
The aim of the manual is to provide guidelines for sampling and data management of possible new indicators of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) concerning the Criterion 4 - Biological diversity in forest ecosystem.
The meaning of each indicator proposed is explained, and detailed guidelines on sampling methods and on data processing and interpretation are given.
Criterion 3 - Maintenance and Encouragement of Productive functions of Forests (Wood and Non-woods)
This Manual describes the assessment method of new SFM Indicators (FOREST EUROPE 2015) with reference to Criterion 3 - Maintenance and Encouragement of Productive functions of Forests (Wood and Non-woods). The attribute of ‘new’ Indicator is referred either to its calculation or to the scale of enforcement.

Criterion 2 - Maintenance of Forest Ecosystem Health and Vitality
This Manual describes the procedures to obtain data on “new” indicators to be applied in order to evaluate tree health and growth under a functional key. “New” indicators comprise variables used in different experiments and in studies, but not yet routinely applied in forest ecosystem monitoring. They are intended to integrate and support the consolidated indicators under the Criterion 2 of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM, Criterion 2: Maintenance of Forest Ecosystem Health and Vitality; Forest Europe, UNECE e FAO 2011).

Criterion 1 - Maintenance and Appropriate Enhancement of Forest Resources and their Contribution to Global Carbon Cycles
The manual that it describes the assessment method of new SFM Indicators (Forest Europe 2015) with reference to Criterion 1 - Maintenance and Appropriate Enhancement of Forest Resources and their Contribution to Global Carbon Cycles
